Christine Nilsson’s “Lohengrin” Shoe – Cloth of Gold with Crystal Studs | Victorian Ceramic Tondi | Unique Collectible Ornament
She sang Lohengrin at the Paris Opéra and wore cloth of gold on her feet while she did it.
Christine Nilsson was one of the most celebrated opera singers of the Victorian age, a Swedish soprano whose voice conquered Europe and whose sense of dress, as Victorian collector T.W. Greig pointedly noted, was equal to her considerable vocal gifts. She is widely believed to have been the inspiration for Christine Daaé, the heroine of Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera.
The great singer, T.W. Greig wrote, does not neglect, in her superior charm of voice, the additional charm of dress. Her Lohengrin shoe bears this out entirely: cloth of gold, gilt buttons appropriate to the whole, and crystal studs glistening like dewdrops across the instep, an elongated toe.
Now captured in gleaming ceramic, this nearly 3” tondi brings Christine Nilsson’s golden stage shoe into your home, a piece for the opera lover, the history collector, or anyone who believes that a great entrance deserves great shoes. Best of all, it ships free.
